About SSDI Benefits

What is SSDI?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides monthly benefits to people who have a qualifying disability and have worked long enough and recently enough under Social Security. SSDI is funded by Social Security taxes (FICA) that you and your employers have paid.

Who is Eligible?

To qualify for SSDI, you must meet both medical and work requirements:

  • Medical: Have a qualifying disability that prevents substantial work
  • Work Credits: Have earned enough work credits (generally 40 credits, 20 in last 10 years)
  • Recent Work: Have worked recently enough under Social Security
  • Duration: Disability expected to last 12+ months or result in death

How Benefits Are Calculated

SSDI benefits are based on your lifetime average earnings covered by Social Security:

  • Primary Insurance Amount (PIA): Based on highest 35 years of earnings
  • Average Monthly Benefit (2025): Approximately $1,537
  • Maximum Monthly Benefit (2025): $3,822
  • Family Benefits: Spouse and children may also qualify
